A sudden loss of hot water in your home is often due to a malfunctioning water heater, such as a tripped breaker, extinguished pilot light, or a faulty thermostat. Leaks or blockages in your plumbing system can also be the cause.

In Illinois, landlords are required to provide essential services like hot water under the state’s landlord-tenant laws. If your landlord fails to restore hot water within a “reasonable time,” typically within 24 to 48 hours after being notified, you may have grounds to seek legal remedies or withhold rent.

In Chicago, landlords are required by law to provide tenants with hot water at a minimum temperature of 120°F (49°C) under the city’s Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO). This is considered an essential service, and landlords must maintain the hot water supply year-round.

If there’s no hot water in your house, check if the water heater’s circuit breaker has tripped or if the pilot light on a gas heater is out. Verify the thermostat is set correctly and look for leaks around the unit.
